We’re Here to Guide You
Starting your driving lessons can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. At RoadSpence, we make the process smooth, clear, and supportive from day one. Whether you're a complete beginner or just unsure where to start, this guide breaks down exactly what you need to get on the road in Bridgend and surrounding areas.

Apply for Your Provisional Licence First
Before you can start driving lessons, you’ll need to apply for a UK provisional driving licence. You must be:
- At least 17 years old
- Able to read a number plate from 20 metres away
- A resident of Great Britain or Northern Ireland
Apply online via the GOV.UK website
Allow about a week for your licence to arrive after application.

Prepare for the Theory Test Early
The theory test checks your understanding of road rules and hazard awareness. It’s made up of two parts:
- Multiple choice questions based on the Highway Code
- Hazard perception video clips
Top Tip: Start practicing while you're learning to drive! We recommend using the DVSA’s official app and resources like Theory Test Pro.
You must pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test.

Book When You're Ready to Pass First Time
Once your instructor feels you're test-ready, you can book the practical driving test. This assesses your ability to:
- Drive safely in different road conditions
- Perform basic manoeuvres (e.g. parallel parking, emergency stop)
- Navigate using a sat nav or following signs
We’ll guide you through mock tests, build your confidence, and ensure you're fully prepared for your big day.
